The New York Jets drafted Richard to replace Joe Namath. Like Namath he was an alumnus of the University of Alabama and played under the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant. He did not live up to Namath’s National Football League stature. In his ten seasons he threw more touchdowns than interceptions in just two seasons. In 1980 he led the league with 30 interceptions and set an NFL record by throwing an interception in 15 games, the most in a single season by a quarterback. Richard Todd turns 72 today.
