Austo-Hungarian Strong Man
Stanislaus Zbyszko
Wrestling Trailblazer
1912 T227 Series of Champions, Wrestler ⭐C. Zbyszko
Born Jan Stanisław Cyganiewicz in 1879 or 1880 in what was then Austria-Hungary, Zbyszko was an exceptionally educated man for a professional wrestler of his era. He studied law, philosophy and music, while developing himself physically through European wrestling and gymnastics. His wrestling education included both Greco-Roman and catch-as-catch-can styles.
His greatest American achievement came in 1921, when he defeated Ed "Strangler" Lewis for the world heavyweight championship.
He later regained a recognized world championship in 1925, making him a two-time world champion in the complicated and fragmented championship system of the period.
