Jack Johnson

The Galveston Giant

John Arthur "Jack" Johnson, widely known as "The Galveston Giant," permanently altered the landscape of sports and American culture when he became the first Black world heavyweight boxing champion in 1908.
Rising from the poverty of post-Reconstruction Texas, he dominated his era with a brilliant, defensive fighting style that frustrated opponents and forced a deeply segregated society to confront its own prejudices.
His legendary status was cemented during the 1910 "Fight of the Century," where his masterful knockout of the "Great White Hope," Jim Jeffries, sparked both immense pride in Black communities and widespread societal backlash.
