The National 2024: How to Plan for One Day at the Show hero image

The National Sports Card Convention is a collector's paradise, but its sheer size can be overwhelming, especially if you only have one day to explore. With hundreds of exhibitors, endless rows of cards, and limited time, it's crucial to have a plan. Though The National will take place July 24-28 in Cleveland this year, Mantel has put together the following tips to help collectors maximize their experience if they can only attend for a single day:

Prioritize Your Goals

Before you arrive, decide what you want to accomplish. Are you looking for specific cards to complete a set? Do you want to meet certain dealers or fellow collectors? Are you interested in attending any special events, such as an autograph session? Having a clear list of priorities will help you stay focused and avoid getting sidetracked.

Map Your Route

The National is a sprawling event, and it's easy to get lost in the maze of booths. Study the floor plan in advance and create a rough route that hits your priority areas. This will save you time and ensure you don't miss anything important.

Pack Light (But Bring Snacks)

You'll be doing a lot of walking and browsing, so pack light. A comfortable backpack or shoulder bag is ideal for carrying your essentials. You’ll want penny sleeves to hold your cards. Don't forget to bring water and snacks, as food options at The National can be limited. Packing a portable charger for your cell phone is a good idea, too, if you plan on comparing online card prices to the ones you’re seeing at the show.

Dress Comfortably

You'll be on your feet for most of the day, so wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Convention centers can also get crowded and warm, so dress in layers that you can easily remove if needed.

Set a Budget And Target List (And Stick to It)

It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and overspend. Determine your budget and the cards you’re targeting beforehand and try to stick to it. Remember, there will be plenty of tempting deals, but you don't want to blow your entire budget on the first few booths.

Don't Expect That Card To Be Available Later

Of course you should walk around the convention and see as much as possible during your one day at The National, but if a card is within budget and on your target list, don’t assume you can go looking for better options elsewhere and return to buy that card later. There are thousands of other collectors at The National, too, and if you don’t buy that card, someone else might. This is why it’s important to know beforehand what you want!

Don't Be Afraid to Negotiate

Haggling is part of the fun at The National. Don't be afraid to negotiate with dealers, especially if you're buying multiple items or higher-priced cards. A little friendly bargaining can often lead to better deals.

Attend A Trade Night

These events are often the highlights of The National. Even if you don’t feel confident trading your own cards, they’re fun events to observe. You can generally find out where trade nights are occurring through social media or word of mouth at the show. And of course, you can check out Mantel’s 2024 The National feed.

Bring Cash

Cash is king at The National. Many vendors prefer cash transactions, and you don't want to miss out on a great deal because you're short on funds. Be sure to bring enough cash to cover your planned purchases, and hit the ATM before you arrive to avoid long lines at the convention center or nearby banks.

Stay Updated

Keep an eye on The National's website and social media channels for any last-minute schedule changes or announcements. This will help you stay informed and adjust your plans if necessary.
