1982 Donruss Diamond Kings
The 1982 Donruss set introduced one of baseball card collecting’s most iconic traditions: Diamond Kings! Created by artist Dick Perez, the first 26 cards in the set featured painted portraits of one player from each Major League team, blending baseball history with artistic flair.
Legends like Pete Rose, Nolan Ryan, George Brett, Ozzie Smith, and Carlton Fisk headlined this inaugural collection. Each card featured a large portrait with a smaller illustration, while the backs shared details about the featured players and their accomplishments.
The Diamond Kings concept would become a Donruss trademark for the next decade, eventually evolving into its own insert cards in 1992. What began as a simple subset became a beloved part of baseball card history, reminding collectors that a card could be more than statistics and a photograph — it could be a little piece of art.
Fun fact: Pete Rose’s #1 card holds a special place in hobby history as the first Donruss Diamond Kings card ever released!
