Groat was truly rare: he was a two-sport star, starring in both the NBA and MLB, one of the very few athletes to excel at the highest level in two major professional sports.
As a baseball player, Groat was an outstanding shortstop and team leader. He won the 1960 National League MVP and led the Bucs to the 1960 World Series Championship.
As a basketball player, he led the NBA in scoring in 1956, with the Fort Wayne Pistons.
