Gene Mauch was widely regarded as a man who played and managed with honor, integrity, and deep respect for the game, even though his career is often remembered more for heartbreak than for championships.
As a player and later a manager, Mauch believed in preparation, discipline, and playing the game “the right way.” He demanded effort and accountability, but not at the expense of sportsmanship.

Many players who played for him (notably with the Phillies, Angels, and Expos) said he was tough but fair — a manager who cared deeply about his players as people, not just as pieces on a chessboard.
In 1981, he was voted A.L. Manager of the Year leading the California Angels to the best record in the A.L. and the franchise’s first-ever postseason appearance.
