🎉 My first article for The Hockey News!: https://thehockeynews.com/womens/other-news/how-the-first-women-s-hockey-card-inspired-a-generation-of-players

This was such a cool piece to work on. In May 2023, I started the first account dedicated to women’s hockey cards on Instagram (@womenshockeycards) with one card in my collection, a signed 1992 Classic Games Manon Rheaume card.

After a year of collecting, publishing posts, and researching the history of women’s hockey cards, I realized that Manon’s 1992 cards were the first trading cards of a women’s hockey player ever produced.

Earlier this year, Ian Kennedy at The Hockey News approached me about writing about women’s hockey collectibles. It was immediately clear to me what topic I wanted to tackle first - Manon’s 1992 cards, a story that had never been told before.

Thank you to Manon, Steve Bartlett (of Bartlett Hockey - Manon’s agent in 1992), and Sami Jo Small for sharing their thoughts about the 1992 cards. Coincidentally, while attending the Toronto Sports Card Expo earlier this year, I was lucky enough to hear Hockey Hall of Famer Angela Ruggiero speak about the absence of women’s cards when she was a young player and was excited to be able to work that into the article.

I grew up reading The Hockey News. I couldn’t be more proud to have my name appear in this publication and shed some light on a previously unexplored area of women’s hockey and sports memorabilia history.

How the First Women's Hockey Card Inspired a Generation of Players

More than a hundred years after women started playing the game, Manon Rhéaume's 1992 hockey cards were the first of a women’s player ever produced. To put that into context, the first men to appear on hockey cards were <a href="https://creasecollector.wee...
