Willie Wilson

Willie Wilson was one of the most electrifying players in baseball during the late 1970s and 1980s, a true throwback speedster who could completely take over a game with his legs and glove. Playing most of his career with the Kansas City Royals, Wilson combined blazing speed, elite defense, and clutch hitting in a way that made him a nightmare for opposing pitchers and catchers. He stole 668 bases in his career, led the American League in steals five times, and even won a batting title in 1982 when he hit .332—rare for a player known mainly for speed. In center field he covered enormous ground, turning would-be hits into outs with smooth, fearless defense. Wilson’s all-around impact helped power Kansas City to the championship in the 1985 World Series, and on any given night he could bunt for a hit, swipe two bases, and track down a ball in the gap that nobody else could reach—making him one of the most exciting and downright badass players of his era.
