Mean Joe Greene ⭐️ North Texas Great
2005 Topps 50th Anniversary, Joe Greene.🏈
I was watching the Army vs North Texas Mean Green game Saturday when one of the TV broadcasters proclaimed that the “Mean Green” got their nickname from their most famous graduate, Mean Joe Greene.
I looked it up and that is not true.
Over the years, the birth of the Mean Green moniker has been mistakenly linked to one of the era's star defensive players, Joe Greene. The fact is the nickname comes from the cheering of a UNT zealot named Sue Graham in 1966. Sue always insisted she was yelling support for the defensive squad and came up with the phrase based on the school's primary color, chanting “Get Mean Green!” when UNT was on defense.
