Carl was a backup running back and kick returner for the San Frncisco 49ers for all or parts of five National Football League seasons. He scored on a 33 yard touchdown pass in Super Bowl XIX. His career ended after the 1987 players strike when the 49ers released him (he had crossed the picket line as a replacement player). After battling alcoholism he was going to resurrect his professional football career in 1989 and had signed a contract with the British Columbia Lions when he passed away from an accidental valium overdose at the age of 29. Carl Monroe would have turned 66 today.
