World Light Heavyweight Champion 1935-1938 Lewis was only 25-years-old when he was forced to retire in 1939, due to blindness in his left eye, a condition he had been fighting with for years. His last bout was a one round KO loss to Joe Louis. It is believed the heavyweight champion knew of Lewis' situation and agreed to the fight in order to give his friend one last big payday.
