Buck O'Neil was one of the most important and beloved figures in baseball history, not only for his talent as a Negro Leagues player and manager, but for preserving and promoting the legacy of Black baseball in America. As the first Black coach in Major League Baseball and a tireless ambassador for the game, O’Neil helped ensure that the stories and accomplishments of Negro Leagues players would never be forgotten.
He was inducted into the MLB HOF in Cooperstown in 2022.
The hobby owes a debt of gratitude to Fleer for capturing the autographs of historical Negro League players before it was too late.
