1933 Goudey Sports Kings Jim Thorpe PSA 8 (Pop 22 - only 5 graded higher)
One of my biggest pickups in a while, excited to ship this one to the @altxyzofficial vault!
This card has the most vivid colors of any of the 1933 Goudey Thorpe cards I’ve looked at, very clean for an 8, may even be under graded honestly.
For those unfamiliar, Jim Thorpe was the greatest athlete alive during his era and dominated in track and field, the NFL, MLB, and any other sport he decided to play.
A few crazy facts:
- According to his obituary in The New York Times, he could run the 100-yard dash in 10 seconds flat; the 220 in 21.8 seconds; the 440 in 51.8 seconds; the 880 in 1:57, the mile in 4:35; the 120-yard high hurdles in 15 seconds; and the 220-yard low hurdles in 24 seconds.
- At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, he achieved unparalleled success by winning both the pentathlon and the decathlon, earning him the title of “World’s Greatest Athlete.” King Gustav V of Sweden congratulated Thorpe, he said, “Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world.” Thorpe reputedly replied, “Thanks, king.”
