The National 2024: How to Prep for an Autograph Session hero image

The National Sports Card Convention not only features more than 600 card dealers, but also over 100 athletes conducting autograph sessions. If you’ve never been to an autograph show before and are planning to get some things signed at The National in Cleveland this year, here are some helpful tips:

Do your research before the show

You’ll need to have a ticket for each autograph session you want to attend, so make sure to consult TRISTAR’s schedule before the show, especially if you can’t attend all five days of The National. In addition to a ticket to any specific autograph session, you’ll also need an admission ticket to The National itself.

Choose Your Items Wisely

Consider the item you want to be signed carefully. For cards, opt for ones with ample space for an autograph, avoiding designs that might obscure the signature. For jerseys, consider the placement's visual appeal and how it might affect the jersey's value.

Bring Painter's Tape

This is a collector's secret weapon. Use painter's tape to mark the exact spot where you want the athlete to sign. It's easily removable and won't damage the item. This is especially useful for jerseys or photos where precise placement is crucial.

Use a Quality Pen

Invest in a pen that is specifically designed for autographs. These pens typically have archival-quality ink that won't fade or bleed over time. Some popular choices include Sharpie pens or paint pens for jerseys. Ballpoint pens are good for baseballs. Once you figure out what items you want to have signed, consider which type of pen makes the most sense.

Bring a Display Case

Right after your item has been signed, put it in a protective case. This will protect against immediate potential damage, as well as UV light and dust.

Get Authentication

For high-value items, consider getting them authenticated at the show. This can significantly increase the value of your autographed item, especially if you plan to sell it in the future.
