On August 29, 1977, Lou Brock, St. Louis Cardinals outfielder, stole second base in a 4-3 loss to the Padres. It was the 893rd career steal for Brock, breaking Ty Cobb's modern career stolen base record. Brock broke the record in the first inning after a leadoff walk.
