In 1982, Marvel Comics released The Life of Pope John Paul II, marking its first full-length biography of a living religious leader. The 64-page, full-color comic chronicled Karol Wojtyła’s journey from his early life in Poland to his papal election and the 1981 assassination attempt . Written by Steven Grant and illustrated by John Tartaglione and Joe Sinnott, the comic was produced without advertisements and included an introduction by Cardinal José Saraiva Martins . The idea for the comic originated during Pope John Paul II’s 1981 visit to Japan. Father Julian Różycki, a Polish missionary in Tokyo, shared Marvel’s earlier comic Francis: Brother of the Universe with the Pope’s entourage. Impressed by the portrayal, the Pope’s team collaborated with Gene Pelc, Marvel’s representative in Japan, to create a comic about the Pope’s life. This collaboration led to the production of The Life of Pope John Paul II, which incorporated the Pope’s recent experiences, including the assassination attempt .
