Bandai Mega-Up Model Kits (1990)

Toys

figurines

model kits

These model kits are a fascinating slice of Samurai Pizza Cats history, bridging the gap between standard figures and full-blown garage kits. Each kit features bold, mechanical stylization and chibi proportions.

This series included:

  • Yattaro (Speedy)

  • Pururun (Polly)

  • Sukashii (Guido)

Each character comes with Toritsukkun armour, and their signature weapons, as well as a weapon exclusive to the model kit, usually something spring-loaded or functioned with elastics (the quality of these elastics were terrible, so most surviving kits contain elastics that are dried out and useless).

The Toritsukkun armour is removable, so the Pizza Cats can either be in their normal battle armour, or their upgraded « Mega-Up » armour. When not wearing the mega-up armour, it assembles cleanly onto the Toritsukkun bird for storage.

While they’re technically buildable kits, I love them as display pieces that capture a more stylized, almost “chibi robot” aesthetic compared to the TV designs.

These kits came in a limited amount of colours. They came with decals, but need a proper paint job to really shine. I haven’t applied the decals, because I plan to paint these, someday.

Of the 90s kits, these are the most accessible. They may be expensive, depending where you shop, but they’re still relatively easy to find through Japanese proxy sites.
