1970-71 Topps Basketball Tall Boy: Why research is important

Sports Cards

NBA

Tall Boys

Topps

I have no complaints about purchasing this 1970-71 Topps Dick Van Arsdale (Tall boy edition), but, what I initially thought was an error (Copyright date says 1968), is not an error, but the way card companies validated that they had a contract and agreement with the NBA to make the trading cards of the players. In the case of this 1970-71 card, the aforementioned agreement was validated in 1968 for a duration of time until that agreement expired. A lot of older cards have this as a feature as this was the way they would demonstrate to the consumer that the card company and the sports organization had an agreement to produce cards of players and the year that contract was agreed to. Now, the year on the back is typically the same year as the season of whichever league is depicted on cards…Figured I would share that knowledge because I did not realize that until I researched it more, myself!
