Joe Nuxhall

Legendary Red

MLB's Youngest Ever

1952 Topps #406, Joe Nuxhall RC. His 1952 Topps card is known for being his first appearance in a major baseball card set.
On August 1, 1944, Joe Nuxhall made his return to the Cincinnati Reds.
His historic MLB debut had actually occurred earlier that year—on June 10, 1944—when he became the youngest player in Major League Baseball history, debuting at just 15 years old. Called up during World War II when many players were serving in the military, Nuxhall faced the St. Louis Cardinals in a relief appearance. Overwhelmed by the moment, he struggled in his debut, allowing five runs in two-thirds of an inning. Though sent back to the minors afterward, returning on this date in 1944, and sticking for a 16-year pitching career. He later became a beloved broadcaster for the Reds.
