There’s a reason base cards are called base cards. Back in the junk wax’s era, all you had were inserts and base cards. No autos, no jersey cards, no numbers cards, no SSP cards. Just your everyday cards. Cards that now aren’t worth very much in money, but to some, they are wroth memories of your childhood. In the 90’s, you collected the players and teams you wanted, and traded any of the cards you didn’t want for cards that caught your eyes. That’s what it was about. As adults, some of us had a childhood PC wroth some money, others just base cards, and memories.
A couple of years ago, I thought about getting rid of a lot of my base cards, and only keeping my good cards. However, I stopped myself. I thought about myself in 10 years, and finding my back cards put up, and getting them down to relive my childhood of card collecting. I did get rid of some cards, but I kept most of my base cards, like Tom Brady, Derrick Henry, Alabama, Titans, and Elvis Presley. While I might not be a true base card collector, I kept these cards because to me, they are wroth more then money can buy.
My Point? Base cards are more than the piece of cardboard that we make them out to be. They hold memories, and remind us of a simpler time, and are the foundation of our collection. So, instead of throwing them out, let’s put them in a binder, and get them up until our kids ask us about our card collection growing up. And if you don’t want them after that, give them to your kids, and let them have the memories that you had. And if you have too many base cards from opening boxes, give them to some kids, and keep the memories alive!
