Cautionary Tale: Why I don't send big money cards to SGC

Sports Cards

SGC

Need to start off by saying that I love SGC and especially their customer service. I will always send (some) cards to them beyond a threshold dollar amount. I know some people would disagree, but I actually don't really like the look of the slabs... big, bulky, cheap black tuxedo insert (if you've ever cracked a case, the plastic is crude and cheap). The quality of the slab.. this is where I've had issues. Enter a 1957 Ernie Banks (Pic 1). I pre-graded this a 6 even though it was a bit OC. I sent it in with a submission and got it back as a 5, NBD. Upon close inspection I noticed a weird white indent (Pic 2). I queried SGC about this and they said send it back.. probably dust and they'll re-slab it. I sent it back and when I received it, I noticed there was a scratch/indent exactly where that white mark was (Pic 3). Had a bit of back and forth with SGC and they even called me to acknowledged that based on the pictures, their slab damaged by card. They comped me by giving me some grading credits, but during the re-slab, they told me the card was fine. Their QC is not as thorough as PSAs from my experience. Had this been a 56 Mickey Mantle which was included with the submission, I would've been furious. I'm sure other grading companies might run into this issue, but I've had this happen twice now with SGC. Always double check for white indents. Whatever is big money to you, I'd hesitate with SGC. Just my 2 cents
