The year was 1989. 3rd grade me was hanging out with one of my buddies in our classroom before school actually started and he was showing me a couple of his cards because he knew I was obsessed with baseball cards. I saw this card and was immediately drawn to it. I had come to LOVE Bo. I had never heard of Classic before, but I thought this was a pretty sweet card. I wanted it, but he wasn’t interested in a trade……yet. Finally, at lunch, I concocted the most aggressive offer I could muster. Our cafeteria’s yeast rolls were precious commodities and one of my favorite lunch staples. My buddy Bobby (then owner of said Bo Jackson card) would always ask me if he could have my roll. My answer was always a resounding NO. Well today was different. I was a boy possessed. We were eating and of course Bobby asked for my roll. This time i told him he could have it, but I’d only give it to him for the Bo Jackson card. A hush fell over our friend group as if we were negotiating a nuclear peace treaty. He half-reluctantly agreed. We shook hands. He got the roll and at recess, I got the Bo. Bobby would be a supporting character in another sports card story for a later date…..😂
