1939-46 Salutation Exhibits, Carl Hubbell Legendary Hall of Famer
Sometimes the story of how you got a card are as interesting as the card itself.
I got this card and a very rare Exhibit card of Ted Williams with #9 showing (see replies for photo), from an antique dealer. The Williams card was at the center of the deal and when we finally agreed on a price, I said how about throwing in the Carl Hubbell card and rounding up to an even $60 purchase? He agreed, so the Hubbell card set me back less than $6.😂
Another interesting tidbit is that I sent the Williams card to be graded a long time ago and just got around to sending in this Hubbell card. Both cards are in the exact same condition, but the Williams card was placed in a PSA 1 holder, while Hubbell sits in a 2 casing.
Carl Hubbell perfected perhaps the greatest screwball ever thrown.
Many historians regard Hubbell's 1934 MLB All-Star Game pitching feat, where he struck out 5 hall of famers consecutively, as the single most astonishing pitching sequence in baseball history
In that game, Hubbell faced what may have been the greatest sequence of hitters ever assembled and struck them out in order --

  • Babe Ruth

  • Lou Gehrig

  • Jimmie Foxx

  • Al Simmons

  • Joe Cronin

Carl Hubbell won 2 x N.L. MVP awards in 1933 and 1936.
His career stats are impressive:

  • 253 victories

  • 2.97 ERA

  • 1,677 strikeouts

  • 9 x All-Star selection

  • 1933 World Series champion

  • Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947.
