1984 Fleer Update Dwight Gooden XRC. Dwight “Doc” Gooden’s rookie season in 1984 with the Mets was nothing short of electric. At just 19 years old, he went 17–9 with a 2.60 ERA and piled up 276 strikeouts in 218 innings — the most in the National League. With a blazing fastball and a curveball that dropped off the table, he looked almost unhittable and quickly earned Rookie of the Year honors. Mets fans at Shea Stadium showed their love with the famous “K Korner,” hanging up a new “K” for every strikeout. Gooden’s dominance didn’t just rack up wins, it gave the Mets and their fans real hope that they could be contenders again.
