1933 Sea Raiders #21 Sir Francis Drake ⭐ Hero or Pirate?
Not as famous as the 1933 Goudey Baseball set, but generally more beautiful in terms of artwork.
Sir Francis Drake, is a curious inclusion in the 1933 Sea Raiders set because Drake occupies the blurred line between hero and pirate. To the English, he was a national hero, explorer, and naval commander. To the Spanish, he was a pirate—a "sea raider" in every sense of the term.
Why Sir Francis Drake is famous --
First Englishman to circumnavigate the globe (1577–1580). His voyage proved England could challenge Spain's dominance on the world's oceans.
Defeat of the Spanish Armada (1588). As Vice Admiral of the English fleet, Drake helped repel the seemingly invincible Spanish Armada, one of the pivotal naval victories in world history.
Privateering against Spain. Under authorization from Elizabeth I, Drake attacked Spanish treasure ships and settlements throughout the Caribbean and Pacific, capturing enormous amounts of gold and silver.
Knighted aboard the Golden Hind. After returning from his voyage around the world laden with treasure, Queen Elizabeth knighted him aboard his ship, the Golden Hind.
