He started pitcher submarine to take stress off of his shoulder. Like they say, necessity is the mother of all inventions. Then he basically perfected a sinker ball from this motion which the Royals were well suited for with their HOF IF.

DYK that he was also a published and was known to his teammates as a quick witted hilarious guy. When asked when he first started pitching submarine he gassed and said to avoid pitching in batting practice.
