Just got this today — super happy to add to my pre-war collection. While Wiltse is not a HOFer, his is an interesting story! This Giants pitcher was nicknamed “Hooks” because of the movement on his curve ball. (His older brother also pitched in the majors — Snake Wiltse!)
Hooks’ 10-inning complete game no-hitter in 1908 still remains a Major League record. Plus, I love that the slab label says “Both Ears Show.”
Give these old cards a look the next time you consider spending $55 (the cost of this 114-year-old slab) on a mega box or on a random prospect card numbered to /99.
