Collection of Ancient Edom Quarter Shekels

Post image 1
Post image 2

My collection of very rare ancient Edom quarter shekel coins from the 4th century BC. By todays' geography the land of Edom borders Israel and Southwest Jordan between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba.

During the Greek and Roman periods, the area was referred to as Idumaea and the people were likewise called Idumaeans.

The Kingdom of Edom and its people are discussed in the Hebrew bible and in the Tanakh (scriptures). At some points in history they were friendly towards and united with the Jews and in other times they murdered, plundered and destroyed.

These coins are considered to be R1 rarity according to David Hendin, a world renown scholar on ancient Biblical and Judaean coins - meaning there are likely between 100 to 500 examples in existence.

For those curious, the reference for these coins is Hendin 6024.

Kingdom of Macedon - Alexander the Great Drachm

Post image 1
Post image 2

This drachm was struck just after the death of Alexander the Great between 336-323 BC. It features the head of Hercules in a lion headdress on the obverse (a common figure type for this time) and Zeus seated on the reverse.

Ancient Greek Athena Tetradrachm

Post image 1
Post image 2

The Athena Tetradrachm is perhaps the most widely collected ancient coin and is a staple of any collection. The obverse of the coin shows the god Athena while the owl is considered her "mascot". This type was the first true international currency of the ancient world and represented about a week’s pay for ancient Greek soldiers.
An interesting tid-bit about this coin type is that they almost always have an incomplete head or crest on Athena’s helmet due to spacing limitation of the hand struck dies used on a smaller blank planchet. There are a few that have been dignified as being "full crest" but these are tremendously rare and hard to come by.
My example from 440-404 BC is no different.
