1981 Muhammad Ali Training Trunks Worn in Advance of Final Fight
This pair of white MacGregor Muhammad Ali boxing trunks with black trim were worn when he was training for his heavyweight fight against Trevor Berbick, which took place on December 11, 1981, in Nassau, Bahamas. This bout, which was the second of Ali's comeback fights following his 1979 retirement, marked the last professional fight of his career. These trunks originate from the collection of Wali Muhammad, who was a longtime member of Ali's training staff and a fixture in Ali's corner during all of his fights in the 1970s. The trunks are accompanied by both a signed LOA from Daria Muhammad, who is the daughter of Wali Muhammad, and an LOA from noted boxing expert Craig Hamilton. The white-satin trunks with black waistband and trim feature a MacGregor label on the front. Moderate wear is displayed throughout, including light discoloration and a few small stains. According to the LOAs, the inside of the rear waistband displays the name "ALI" and the inside of the front waistband has the year "81," all written in the hand of Wali Muhammad. Approximate size L-XL. Ali officially retired from the ring in 1981 after losing a unanimous decision to Berbick. Documented Muhammad Ali fight-worn garments are extremely rare. For that reason, sparring trunks and/or robes such as this (which are also extremely scarce) usually represent the only alternative for those wishing to own an authentic piece of fight gear actually worn by Muhammad Ali. Matted and framed together with a color signed photo of Ali (8 x 10 inches), signature grades a "9."
