Upper Deck Legends

Not many achieved greatness in athletics and politics. This Upper Deck set has always been one of my favorites!

  • He helped lead the Bills to back-to-back AFL Championships in 1964 and 1965.

  • 1965 was Kemp’s standout year: he was named AFL Most Valuable Player.

  • At retirement in 1969, Kemp held several AFL career records, including for passing yards. He retired as the AFL’s all-time leader in passing yards with about 21,130 yards.

  • He also helped found the AFL Players Association in 1964, and served as its president for five terms. So he was not just a player, but a leader among his peers.

Political & Public Service Career Highlights

  • Kemp was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from New York (western New York, Buffalo region) in 1970 and served nine terms (1971-1989).

  • He was a major proponent of supply-side economics. One of his signature policy efforts was co-sponsoring the “Kemp-Roth” tax cut, which became part of the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981 under President Reagan.

  • After running (unsuccessfully) for the Republican nomination for President in 1988, Kemp was appointed by President George H.W. Bush as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), serving from 1989 to 1993.

  • In 1996, he was the Republican nominee for Vice President, running with Bob Dole. They lost to Bill Clinton and Al Gore.
