Paco Pomet (born 1970 in Granada, Spain) is a contemporary painter known for his surreal, satirical paintings that mimic old black-and-white photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He studied fine arts at the University of Granada and later spent time in the U.S. as an artist-in-residence.
Style
Pomet’s work has a few defining characteristics:
Vintage aesthetic – paintings resemble historical photos or postcards
Subtle surrealism – strange, impossible, or absurd elements inserted into otherwise realistic scenes
Deadpan humor – the absurdity is presented calmly, almost documentary-like
Social commentary – often about power, nationalism, colonialism, masculinity, or modern society
Many critics compare his approach to visual satire traditions associated with artists like René Magritte and Salvador Dalí, though Pomet’s tone is more ironic and political.
