On August 12, 1940, the Indians and Tigers were tied for first place with matching records, 64-44. Each side pitched their "Ace", Bob Feller for the Indians and Hal Newhouser for the Tigers. It was the first time the two aces faced each other in their careers with Feller leading the Indians to an 8-5 victory. In doing so, Feller became the first 20-game winner in MLB that year. Bullet Bob went on to win 27 games that year.
