Manteland Card of The Day ⭐️Throwback Thursday
1949 Bowman #233, Larry Doby RC ⭐️ MLB Pioneer
This is one of the most historically significant rookie cards in the hobby, yet it remains surprisingly undervalued compared to many other Hall of Fame rookies from the same era.
Most collectors know that Larry Doby was the first Black player in American League history.
What many don't realize is that he debuted only about 11 weeks after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in the National League.
Doby endured essentially the same racism, isolation, and hostility as Robinson but received only a fraction of the publicity and recognition.
Aside from being a Legendary Hall of Famer, Doby's accomplishments are staggering:
First Black player in American League history.
First Black player to hit a home run in the World Series.
First Black player to win a World Series (1948 Cleveland Indians).
First Black player to lead the American League in home runs.
Later became the first Black manager in American League history.
He started his professional career in the Negro League with the Newark Eagles.
Doby helped lead the Newark Eagles to the 1946 Negro World Series championship and that season he batted a staggering .391.
