The card of the day for the last day of Black History Month 2026 naturally has to be Larry Doby.
The most humble yet deserving African American Hall of Famer in baseball.
Larry Doby was the first to integrate the American League, yet he did not get the fanfare nor did he seek the limelight that was thrust on Jackie Robinson who made his MLB history debuting just weeks before Doby.
Larry Doby was a MLB Pioneer and Trailblazer by any meaningful major league measurement, but still goes largely unrecognized today.
To Larry Doby, I tip my cap and give my utmost respect and admiration.

Roy began playing baseball professionally in the Negro League.
His skill, perseverance, and determination were rewarded with a contract with the Dodgers where he excelled until his career was tragically cut short due to a paralyzing car accident.
Roy Campanella was a cornerstone of baseball’s integration era, proving that excellence, leadership, and intelligence behind the plate transcended race as he became a three-time MVP with the Brooklyn Dodgers. His impact helped legitimize integrated Major League Baseball and set a standard of respect, professionalism, and greatness that reshaped the game.

1948-49 Leaf #79, Jackie Robinson ⭐ MLB Pioneer
Both cards are part of Jackie Robinson’s rookie-card group as they are his earliest nationally distributed cards.
The 1948-49 Leaf card generally carries the moniker of true RC by many auction houses and collectors.
However, recent historical research has shown the the set once commonly referred to as “1948 Leaf,” was not broadly or consistently distributed until 1949. Much of the Leaf set appears to have been issued in multiple printings, with uneven regional circulation and interruptions caused by Leaf’s legal battle with Bowman.

As a result, many collectors now characterize the set as “1948–49 Leaf” rather than strictly “1948.”
Regardless, both cards are treated as essential Jackie Robinson rookie-era pieces.
