Fred Couples on the cover of Sports Illustrated (April 20, 1992)
Happy 66th birthday to Fred Couples, seen here on the cover of Spots Illustrated after winning The Masters in 1992.
⛳ While it was his only major win (and only SI cover appearance), Couples was among the most popular players of the 90’s, in part due to his appearances on made-for-TV events like Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf and The Skins Game, where he raked in more than $4 million in 11 matches.
Also in this issue: “Touchdown” Tommy Vardell of Stanford, who would be drafted 9th overall by the Cleveland Browns, and a feature on Charlotte Hornets rookie Larry Johnson.
