22-year-old Jack Nicklaus on the cover of Sports Illustrated after his first U.S. Open victory at Oakmont
On Father’s Day 1962, 22-year-old Jack Nicklaus outdueled local favorite Arnold Palmer in an 18-hole playoff at Oakmont to win his first career major. Palmer seemed to know what was ahead, warning after the match, “Now that the big guy is out of the cage, everybody better run for cover.” Nicklaus would go on to win 17 more majors over the next 25 years.
