Originally a starter, Joe was a lefty closer for the Houston Astros in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. His career was nearly cut short when he needed Tommy John surgery in 1982 but was able to return as a lefty middle man until his retirement after the 1987 season. Joe Sambito turns 74 today.
