27 years ago this month, the oversized and photo-heavy ESPN The Magazine debuted. The first cover featured athletes they deemed “NEXT” — NBA’s Kobe Bryant, MLB’s Alex Rodriguez, NFL’s Kordell Stewart, and NHL’s Eric Lindros. The NEXT distinction would go on to become an annual award.
