The legendary season of Joe "Smoky Joe" Wood was his historic 1912 Major League Baseball season with the Boston Red Sox. At just 22 years old, Wood put together one of the most dominant single-season pitching performances in baseball history.

• The 16-Game Win Streak: Wood tied the American League record by winning 16 consecutive games between July and September.

• Showdown with Walter Johnson: On September 6, 1912, Wood faced off against legendary Washington Senators ace Walter Johnson in front of a packed Fenway Park. Wood bested Johnson in an epic 1–0 complete-game masterpiece to extend his winning streak to 14.

• World Series Triumph: Wood capped off his legendary year in the 1912 World Series against the New York Giants. He pitched in four games, winning three of them—including the deciding Game 8—to bring the championship home to Boston.

Tragically, Wood suffered a severe thumb and shoulder injury the following year. He was never able to maintain that legendary pitching peak, though he later reinvented himself as a highly productive major-league outfielder for Cleveland.
