1922 Exhibits, Joe Wood ⭐ Smoky Joe
I bought this card raw in about 2020, sent to PSA in January '26 and just got it back a few days ago.
This is an amazing card and a very good grade on a very scarce card.
Smoky Joe Wood was one of baseball's greatest legends.
Joe Wood dominated the Deadball Era, winning an astounding 34 games for the Boston Red Sox in 1912 while leading the American League in wins, ERA, strikeouts, and winning percentage.
Many contemporaries believed he threw harder than Walter Johnson, including "The Big Train" himself when asked if he threw as hard as Smoky Joe Wood, he replied,
"Mister, there is no man who throws as hard as Smoky Joe Wood."
But devastating arm injuries abruptly ended his pitching prime. Rather than disappear, Wood reinvented himself as an outfielder, batting .305 over a 14-year major league career and helping the Red Sox capture four World Series championships (1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918). Few players in baseball history have excelled as both an elite pitcher and an everyday position player, making Smoky Joe Wood one of the most remarkable—and underrated—stars the game has ever produced.
