Posting this card In honor of the West Virginia Mountaineer baseball team's first ever College World Series appearance.
Few figures in West Virginia history are as legendary as Lewis Wetzel. Born in 1763 and raised along Wheeling Creek in what is now northern West Virginia, Wetzel became famous as a scout, hunter, and Indian fighter during the violent frontier conflicts of the late 18th century. According to frontier accounts, he possessed extraordinary wilderness skills, including the remarkable ability to reload his flintlock rifle while running at full speed, a feat that earned him the nickname “Death Wind” among his enemies.
Wetzel County, WV is named in his honor.
