The 1993-94 NBA Jam Session set by Fleer is one of the more unique basketball releases of the early 1990s. Instead of standard-sized cards, Fleer went with a “tallboy” design that made the cards stand out immediately in packs and binders. The oversized format, glossy photography, and colorful full-bleed layouts gave the set a very energetic arcade-era feel that matched the NBA’s popularity at the time.
The base set contains 240 cards and features many stars from the golden era of 90s basketball, including rookies like Anfernee Hardaway, Chris Webber, and Jamal Mashburn. Big names such as Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, and Charles Barkley helped make the product popular with collectors then and now.
One of the biggest appeals of the release was its insert sets. Inserts like “Gamebreakers,” “Slam Dunk Heroes,” “Rookie Standouts,” and “Second Year Stars” captured the flashy style that defined mid-90s basketball cards. The Gamebreakers inserts, in particular, used bold graphics and gold foil accents that still look very much of their era today.
Among collectors, Jam Session has developed a bit of a cult following. Many hobbyists remember the set fondly because the tallboy cards felt different from everything else on store shelves. Even today, collectors on Reddit still refer to them simply as “Tall Boys,” and many appreciate them as a fun symbol of the creative 90s card boom.
