Nicknamed "The Raging Bull," LaMotta was an American middleweight boxer known for his relentless fighting style, iron chin, and toughness. He is best remembered for his six brutal bouts with Sugar Ray Robinson, handing Robinson his first professional loss in 1943. LaMotta won the world middleweight title in 1949 and successfully defended it until losing to Robinson in their infamous 1951 "St. Valentine’s Day Massacre" fight. He retired in 1954 with a record of 83 wins, 19 losses, and 4 draws. He is immortalized in Martin Scorsese’s 1980 film Raging Bull, based on LaMotta's autobiography.
