Ted Williams on the cover of TIME (April 10, 1950)
Coming off his second MVP, Williams broke his arm during the 1950 All-Star Game and missed the next two months of the season. When Williams returned in September, he hit a mere .303 (20-for-66) while playing through lingering pain. He finished with 82 runs scored, 28 homers, and 97 RBI — the worst season of his career to that point.
