Genesis first US 7" single

Post image 1

This is the ultra rare stock issue of the first 7" single put out by Genesis in 1968 on the Parrot label (Decca's US label at the time.) Only some seven or so are known to exist. One just popped up for sale on Discogs. This should be interesting!
In the earlier days of vinyl, releases were issued in promo and stock versions. (Still happens, but the dynamic below has changed as a result of the "collectible" mentality that didn't exist back then).
Promo versions (typically a different label art) went to radio stations, etc. Stock copies went to stores for sale. Promo copies of not all that popular singles (like this one) sat on a library shelf, rarely played and eventually sold off in excellent condition when no longer needed. Stock copies were either not purchased and tossed, or then the few purchased, were played and either hung on to or more likely tossed as well.
Genesis first album and singles were a flop in the US (long story). Promo issues (three variations) are much easier to come by, typically going for $100-$200. Stock copies like this one however are ultra rare. The last sale almost a decade ago was for (IIRC) around $5K.
Seeing one for sale (I know this seller, it's a legit listing) is a bit like spotting Ahab's white whale.
