Some pieces just hit different when there’s a story behind them.

Spending Saturdays at my in-laws’ flea market booth when my wife and I first started dating is where my appreciation for coins really took hold. I’ve always loved history, and coins made it tangible — something you could actually hold and connect to a moment in time.

About 10 years ago, my mother-in-law gifted me this commemorative Baseball Hall of Fame coin, and it’s been a favorite ever since. The concave obverse is such a thoughtful touch, mimicking the pocket of a glove and tying the design perfectly back to the game.

It’s a reminder that the best collectibles aren’t always the rarest or most valuable — they’re the ones with personal history behind them.

Ted Lyle Simmons (born August 9, 1949), nicknamed "Simba", is an American former professional baseball player and coach.[1] A switch-hitter, Simmons was a catcher for most of his Major League Baseball (MLB) career with the St. Louis Cardinals (1968–1980), the Milwaukee Brewers (1981–1985) and the Atlanta Braves (1986–1988).[1]Although he was often overshadowed by his contemporary, Johnny Bench, Simmons is considered one of the best hitting catchers in MLB history.[2] While his power numbers paled in comparison to Bench, Simmons still managed to hit for a higher batting averagedespite playing home games in a notoriously tough hitter's park.[3]
