Congratulations to Travis Hunter, the winner of the 2024 Heisman Trophy! This is his 1st Sports Illustrated cover appearance from July 2022 graded in newsstand at 9.8. This copy is a pop 3 with none graded higher. Hunter joins the late Rashaan Salaam as the only Heisman winners from the University of Colorado.
Happy to see Reggie Bush is getting his Heisman finally, especially considering how much NIL has changed the college sports landscape since he played.
But it got me thinking... is he allowed to sell it?
A handful of Heisman trophies have sold in the past- Ricky Williams sold his for $504k. Tim Brown sold his for $435K. OJ's originally sold for $230K.
But since 1999, the Heisman Trust has barred recipients from selling theirs, making them sign a contract before they are able to take home the statue.
I'm assuming Bush would be subject to that same agreement, and unless he harbors a ton of resentment towards the Heisman Trust, probably wants to keep the trophy he waited 14 years to get back.
One interesting wrinkle I found about selling the trophy... auctioning it off as a 'rental' for charity is apparently allowed. Every year Tim Tebow puts his up for good causes, giving bidders a chance to take home the bronze for 6 months to a year. Cool idea!
