Jack Nicklaus turns 85 years old today. This Time cover celebrates his 1962 U.S. Open playoff victory over the King himself, Arnold Palmer. Nicklaus was just 22 when he captured the first of his 18 major championships.

Many of Time’s most famous covers feature illustrated portraits, rather than photographs. This one was painted by the late Russell Hoban, who also created cover art for Sports Illustrated and The Saturday Evening Post before gaining greater notoriety as a prolific fantasy author.
