One of my first memories of collecting is the special set that Fleer came out with in 1987! Do any of you remember these cards? Weird color combination but man the memories!
While not nearly as impressive as the Ted Williams bat barrel I posted yesterday, this one is still a big card for me. One of the best third baseman to ever play in the MLB, Mike Schmidt hit with power and was a fixture for 20 years in the league. Great game-used bat barrel nameplate card from Leaf.
These early pack-pulled (1991 Classic)Mike Schmidt autographs are still super reasonably priced and can be had very easily for an affordable price. The corners of this one aren’t super sharp, but I thought the card would be an 8. Oh well. Still presents really well.
Mike Schmidt was one of my favorite non-Cardinal players as a kid. A dominant third base power hitter with a sweet ‘stache. He was a powerful presence in baseball and still is known as one of the best 3rd baseman to ever play the game.
If you haven’t seen MLB Network’s new doc on Mike Schmidt, it’s worth checking out. I’m not sure another athlete of Schmidt’s caliber has ever had such a complex relationship with the city in which he spent his whole career. The doc did a good job of unpacking that. Interesting to hear Mike’s perspective on it all at this stage of his life too.
